666, Barcodes, and the Mark of the Beast

the devil is not in upc barcodes

Some people mistakenly believe that UPC barcodes somehow contain the number "666". Therefore, the logic [sic] goes, all barcodes contain the Mark of the Beast. No. The devil isn’t in UPC bar codes. It’s a baseless superstition, an urban legend, and total baloney. This lie-that-won’t-die is a misinterpretation of Revelation 13:16-18

King James Version 2000

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

New Oxford Annotated Bible

16 Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead,

17 so that no one buy or sell who does not have the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.

18 This calls for wisdom: let anyone with understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a person. Its number is six hundred sixty-six.

All the fuss is about the left, middle, and right guard bars found within UPC barcodes. The guard bars are reference points that scanners use when decoding a barcode. The guard bars don’t encode any data, let alone a "6".

In fact, there are two different 6’s in the UPC character set, one used on the left side of the symbol and another on the right. So which 6 is the horned one lurking in?

If you do believe that UPC barcodes include "666" and are therefore the work of Satan, simply refrain from buying things with UPC barcodes on them. And don’t forget your tin foil hat.
