Interleaved 2 of 5, sometimes referred to as ITF, is a barcode symbology that encodes numeric data. A very compact symbology, each pair of numbers in an Interleaved 2 of 5 barcode is represented by only one character. Interleaved 2 of 5 barcodes employ a 2:1 compression ratio, so the data to be encoded must be even digit strings. The odd digits in your input string are encoded in the bars while the even digits are encoded in the spaces. The bars and spaces are interleaved hence the symbology's name.
