POSTNET barcodes are used to encode ZIP codes on US mail. POSTNET bar codes can be created for 5-digit ZIP codes, 9-digit ZIP+4 codes, and 11-digit Delivery Point Barcodes. The USPS prefers the use of 11-digit ZIP codes and gives rate discounts for their use.
