UPC stands for Universal Product Code and UPC barcodes are the symbols you see on almost every retail product that passes through the checkout line. If it's a barcode that's part of a product's packaging, if it gets scanned at the cash register, it's a UPC symbol in the US, a JAN in Japan, and an EAN in the rest of the world.
UPCTools comes with ten different barcode fonts. Choose between full- or half-height barcodes, some pre-narrowed to compensate for ink spread on the printing press, all carefully designed to meet GS1 barcode standards. UPCTools calculates the necessary check digit for your UPC, ISBN-13, EAN, ISSN and JAN barcodes.
To create one or a handful of barcodes, use our bundled utility, create your barcodes and paste them into your target application. To create batches of barcodes use our free Excel, Access, or Crystal Reports plug-ins and turn your list of data into perfect barcodes in a matter of seconds.
UPC-A, the ubiquitous retail barcode, is comprised of three parts: a company prefix, a unique product ID number, and a check digit. To create your own UPC barcodes, the first step is to obtain a company prefix from GS1, the standards body which administers all specifications regarding UPC barcodes. Once you’ve got your UPC numbers in hand, UPCTools is the key to quickly turning those numbers into high-quality printed barcodes on labels, packaging, reports, databases or documents.
ISBN-13 stands for International Standard Book Number. ISBN-13 barcodes are used exclusively for commercial books and book-like products. An ISSN is an International Standard Serial Number and is an 8 digit number which identifies periodical or serial book-like publications such as magazines, journals, etcetera.
An EAN is a European Article Number, an ‘international’ version of the UPC barcode. EAN commercial barcode standards were adopted in 1976. A JAN is a Japan Article Number, a barcode standard comparable to EAN.
C128Tools is available for Windows, Macintosh, Linux/UNIX and a variety of other platforms. The fonts come in both TrueType and Type 1 Postscript format, and PCL by request.
